Customizing Photoshop Shortcut Keys

While I work with Photoshop, most of the persons around me do ask which key did you press that gave you this action, sometimes I will reply them with the key.

Some persons that has the time to check while there are working on a project in Photoshop, sometimes there try the same key and returned back to me with a failed result “the key you gave is not working” my reply will be it’s a customized key.

Photoshop has lots of preset shortcut keys which makes it very to work with its application, and also you can as well create a custom shortcut yourself.

In this guide I will show you how to setup your own keyboard shortcut keys and as well view the existing keys.

Setting up Keyboard shortcut keys

By now you have launched photoshop application and already to start working. Follow this simple steps to view and also customize your keyboard shortcut keys

    • On your keyboard press and hold “ Cntrl + alt + shift + K ” for windows and “ Cmd + alt + option + K “ for Mac, a dialog box will display like the one below.

  • On the dialog box, locate the menu which you intend add a custom key and click on the arrow beside it to open its features.

Once the above step is done scroll to check the already existing shortcut and look for the action or feature you needed.

There are two columns “The application menu command” and the “Shortcut

The application Menu command

This column displays all the Menu and its commands in a drop-down menu. To view any menu’s command, click on the arrow beside it as earlier communicated above and click again to close.

This displays the keyboard attached to each command, a command without a shortcut simply means non has been assigned to it.

How To Assign Keyboard shortcut to any Command

  • On the keyboard shortcuts and menu, locate a menu and its command you which to assign your custom keys to.

For instance, if I needed to assign a custom shortcut to Box Blur, I will locate Filter menu and click the arrow beside it and scroll to Blur > then Box Blur.

  •  Once this is done, on the shortcut column, click on the empty box inline with the Box Blur to enter the custom Key of your choice. As shown in the image below.

Now we are ready to enter the new/custom key for Box Blur, to do this, hold the intended key you which to use, in my case I press “ Cntrl + shift + , “ and then release the keys in other for it to display as shown in the image below

  • Once this is done, click on accept button, and lastly click on Ok

To verify the newly added shortcut, use any image and hold “ Cntrl + shift + , “ the box blur dialog box will display.
